Gate Valve Leakage: Causes, Prevention, and Repair

March 18, 2024 by Brina

Gate valves are essential in controlling large amounts of water in pipelines. Unfortunately, when they malfunction or leak, they can be highly hazardous to plants and equipment.

Therefore, they should be checked frequently and replaced when they begin to leak.

Inspect & Avoid

It is essential to regularly inspect and repair a gate valve, if you have one, in order to avoid any potential leaks. Doing this can save you money and protect your home from costly water damage.

It is also essential to check whether the gate valve is oriented correctly with respect to its flange or pipe. This issue often leads to leaks within the valve.

To prevent leaks, you can adjust the valve handle if necessary to align it with a flange or pipe. Doing so will reduce stress on the valve and thus help ensure its longevity.

Another way to prevent leakage is by regularly cleaning the internal components of a gate valve. Doing so will eliminate dirt, corrosion, and impurities that could otherwise lead to blockage.

Increased fluid flow and optimal pressure levels can also be achieved by opening and using water to flush away any sediment that may have built up inside.

Clean

Maintenance of gate valves is critical in order to prevent leakage. This is especially pertinent if the valve is utilized in waterworks applications where debris can build up inside its box and prevent shutting off completely.

Fortunately, this task is relatively straightforward. All you need are a screwdriver, wrench set, and seat removal tool.

Replace

Sometimes, a gate valve will not fully close, and water may still flow through it even after being shut off. Not only is this situation frustrating, but also potentially hazardous.

If the handle of your gate valve is stuck, loosen the packing nut above and around the valve body. Lowering the gate repeatedly will break free any sediment buildup and flush it away.

If the issue persists, you may need to replace your gate valve. Be sure to select the right type for your requirements and location.

Repair

Gate valves can fail if not fully closed or sediment accumulates inside them. They may also leak if damaged or not the correct size for their application.

If your gate valve is leaking, the first step to take is to inspect the area where it’s occurring. Typically, leaks occur around the stem of the gate valve.

A water line leak here could indicate that the packing nut on the valve stem is not tightened securely. Gently tightening this nut should stop the leak.

However, be careful not to overtighten the nut, as this could make it difficult to turn the valve again in the future.

If the water is still seeping from the valve stem, after you adjust it slightly, replacing packing material under the nut could be necessary to prevent future leaks and provide a simple yet effective fix.

Xintai Valve manufactures a broad selection of valves. Their product line includes globe, check, ball, butterfly, and air/oxygen control valves for various applications. They come in an extensive range of sizes and materials like cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, or aluminum.
